TENNYSON, Alfred Lord. Idylls of the King.

London: Edward Moxon & Co, 1864. 18mo, 6.75"x 4.5", vi + 261pp. Fine smooth calf presentation binding with the gilt crest of the Merchant Taylor's School from their last year in London (1865). Beneath the crest are the words "Laborum Præmia, 1865", or "Rewards of Labor". Five raised bands, red morocco spine label, extensive gilt work, marbled papers, and marbled edges. Edges rubbed, some light scratches to back board, and some dampstain on front board. Internally clean and generally unfoxed. Signed by the receipient, George Frederic Baden of Middlesex. Very Good.

The Merchant Taylors’ School, founded in 1561, was one of the “Great Nine” English public schools, renowned for its rigorous classical curriculum and distinguished alumni. In 1865 the school left its historic London site at Suffolk Lane for new premises in Charterhouse Square, marking the end of its three centuries in the City. Prize bindings from this final London year are especially evocative of that transitional moment in the school’s history.
