First edition thus. 7.75” x 5.5”, vii +263pp. Original emerald green cloth stamped in gilt with Napoleonic imperial device to upper board and spine. Text in French. Light rubbing and a few small marks to boards, corners gently bumped; sound and attractive. Signature on FFEP. Very Good+.
This celebrated six-act verse drama first performed at the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt on 15 March 1900, centered on Napoleon II, the Duke of Reichstadt. A visually striking early edition of Rostand’s major follow-up to Cyrano de Bergerac, notable for its elegant Napoleonic binding design and strong association with Sarah Bernhardt, who created the title role on stage.
