This book contains two reports from 1864 from the 1st session of the 38th Congress, “Fort Pillow Massacre” (128pp) and “Returned Prisoners” (42pp). The latter includes 8 detailed portraits of returned prisoners showing their poor health/conditions and coinciding testimonies. The book features the signature of J. Hale Sypher inside the front cover just above a round bookplate from Justin R. Sypher (details below). Hinges intact, binding sound. Significant foxing throughout, several instances of insect holes, and a fair number of torn bottom right page corners. Significant fraying of cover cloth at head/tail of spine. General Jacob Hale Sypher (June 22, 1837 – May 9, 1905) was an attorney and politician, elected as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Louisiana. He served four terms as a Republican after having served in the Union Army.
Justin Ralph Sypher (1874 - 1948) was Jacob Sypher’s nephew, the son of Josiah Reinhart Sypher, a war correspondent for the New York Tribune.
