OLIPHANT, Annie. Handwritten Notes for Domestic Science/Cookery Course.

Boston: Atkinson, Mentzer & Company, n.d./c1915-1925 [publisher/date of binder]. 10.75 “ 8.25”, 32 leaves on one-sided lined paper (26 with text). Black cloth covered loose-leaf note book cover tied with black shoelace. Name “Annie Oliphant” written inside front cover. Notes cover a variety of food and cooking related topics, including recipes and a hand drawn diagram of the digestive system. Very Good+ with minimal wear and legible, neat handwriting.

These notes document early twentieth-century instruction in Domestic Science at a time when home economics programs were expanding rapidly in schools and normal colleges throughout the United States. They reflect the Progressive Era shift toward “scientific” household management, emphasizing nutrition, physiology, standardized measurements, and methodical food preparation. As a surviving student manuscript, the notebook provides a primary-source record of how this curriculum was taught and practiced at the classroom level.
