LOWELL, Percival. The Evolution of Worlds.
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1909. First edition, first printing, published December 1909 as stated. Illustrated. Publisher’s red cloth stamped in gilt within ruled borders to upper cover and spine. 9" x 6.5". Moderate rubbing and light scuffing to cloth with small frays at spine ends and corners, including a bit of exposure at foot of spine; binding sound and square. Interior clean overall with scattered foxing and toning to preliminaries and plates. Rear hinge starting. Very Good.
A desirable early astronomical work by Percival Lowell, best known for his influential—if controversial—theories regarding Mars and planetary formation. Here Lowell expands beyond Mars to present a broad cosmological study of nebulae, planetary development, and the formation of solar systems, illustrated with striking early astrophotographic plates including Saturn and the Andromeda Nebula. An appealing turn-of-the-century science title with strong crossover interest for astronomy, planetary science, and the history of speculative cosmology.
