HERBERTSON, Agnes Grozier. The Creepie-Man and Other Stories

New York: Cupples & Leon Company, 1923. Early American edition. 8.75" x 6.25". Illustrated by Lilian A. Govey with 20 full-page color plates, along with black-and-white vignette decorations throughout. Original dark green pictorial cloth stamped in gilt with mounted color onlay to front board and decorative gilt spine ornaments. Light rubbing and minor wear to extremities, a bit of fading to spine lettering, binding sound and interior notably clean with plates bright and well-preserved. A charming copy. Very Good+.

A beautifully produced Edwardian fairy story collection centered on the title tale of the Creepie-Man and Be-Wee, filled with woodland fantasy, mischievous creatures, and dreamlike supernatural episodes. Lilian A. Govey’s illustrations are especially appealing, with soft atmospheric color plates and decorative line work that give the book much of its collectible appeal. An attractive example of early twentieth-century fairy literature in one of Cupples & Leon’s better juvenile gift-book formats.
