GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von. Faust: A Dramatic Poem.
London: Edward Moxon, Dover Street, 1838. Third Edition. 6.75" x 4.25", xxxvi + 305pp. Translated into English prose with notes by A. Hayward, Esq. Contemporary half calf over cloth-covered boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt top edge. Binding rubbed with wear to joints and spine ends, small losses to leather at head and foot, boards firm, hinges sound; contents clean with light toning and occasional faint spotting. Very Good.
One of the earliest widely read English prose translations of Faust, Hayward’s version played a major role in shaping Victorian engagement with Goethe’s text, making the work accessible to readers outside German literary circles. This third edition includes an expanded advertisement detailing revisions and situates the book amid the surge of competing English translations in the 1830s.
