Lione: Appresso Guglielmo Rouillio, 1575. Fourth and final Rouillé edition. 4.75” x 2.75”, 627pp with 6 unnumbered leaves of table. Text in Italian, printed in italic type. With a woodcut portrait of Dante in medallion and three full-page woodcut illustrations opening the Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Early 20th-century full vellum binding with overlapping yapp edges; smooth spine gilt with simple fillets and star tools, lettered in gilt to a black morocco label with a second red morocco label below (“Lione, Rouillio 1575”); all edges gilt. Contemporary patterned endpapers.
Textblock evenly toned with scattered staining and dampmarking, most visible to lower margins; leaves remain supple. Inner hinges neatly reinforced; binding sound and square. Armorial-style engraved bookplate of Nora Khuen-LĂĽtzow to front pastedown. A well-preserved, attractive copy in a sympathetic later vellum binding. Very Good.
Compact and intentional in format, this Rouillé Dante reflects the 16th-century move toward portable, reader-friendly editions of major Italian texts, here enhanced with commentary and a vocabulary index for study. Scarce in commerce.
