[CHAUCER, Geoffrey] TYRWHITT, Thomas. The Poetical Works of Geoffrey Chaucer. With an Essay on His Language and Versification, and An Introductory Discourse; Together with Notes and a Glossary.

London: Edward Moxon, 1847. Reprint of the 1843 edition. 9.5" x 6.5", lxx + 502pp. Full chocolate brown leather binding with gilt spine titling and gilt edges all around. Illustrated title and portrait frontispiece. Begins with The Canterbury Tales and continues on with many of Chaucer's other poems. Binding rubbed at head/tail of spine as well as along front joint. Hinges sound and textblock unmarked/unfoxed, albeit very mildly toned. Very Good.

Tyrwhitt’s edition, first issued in the late 18th century, was the first truly modern scholarly treatment of Chaucer and long remained the standard reference. His introductory essay and glossary helped make Middle English accessible to general readers and established a framework for Chaucer studies that endured throughout the 19th century.
