Publisher’s decorative blue pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and multiple colors with floral motifs and elaborate panel design; spine similarly decorated; patterned endpapers. Mild rubbing to extremities with slight fading at the spine; a few small spots internally but generally clean and sound. Gift inscription on flyleaf dated 1898. Very Good.
A popular Victorian juvenile adaptation of Cervantes’ masterpiece, illustrated by the prolific historical and literary artist Sir John Gilbert. Routledge produced many attractive gift editions of classic literature for young readers, and this example—with its bright multi-color cloth binding and numerous illustrations—represents the firm’s characteristic combination of decorative binding design and accessible literary presentation.
