BREASTED, James Henry. A History of Egypt: From the Earliest Times to the Persian Conquest.
New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1905. First edition. 9.5" x 7", xxix + 634pp. Illustrated throughout with 200 illustrations and maps, including a color frontispiece with original tissue guard. Publisher’s Egyptian Revival cloth binding designed by Decorative Designers, with gilt and polychrome-stamped cover decoration. Front hinge starting but holding; light rubbing at extremities and minor wear to spine ends. Very Good.
Breasted’s history traces Egyptian civilization from its earliest origins through the Persian conquest, drawing on the archaeological and textual scholarship that helped establish Egyptology as a modern academic field. The volume is especially notable in this form for its elaborate Decorative Designers binding, a striking example of early twentieth-century American Egyptian Revival book design.
