Original publisher’s red cloth, elaborately gilt with A. A. Turbayne’s floral and foliate design to the upper board, gilt spine lettering, gilt edges, patterned endpapers also designed by A. A. Turbayne. Cloth rubbed at extremities with minor fraying at spine ends, light surface wear and dulling to gilt, small loss at spine foot, hinges sound, binding secure; contents clean with scattered light foxing. Spine text/designs dulled. Very Good.

The first Macmillan illustrated edition of Emma, featuring Hugh Thomson’s influential illustrations, which played a significant role in shaping late-Victorian visual interpretations of Austen’s novels. This edition is widely regarded as one of the most attractive illustrated Austen printings of the period. Part of Macmillan's red "Peacock Series".
