A posthumous collection of eighteen short stories by Virginia Woolf, assembled and edited by her husband, Leonard Woolf, following her death in 1941. The volume includes stories previously published in Monday or Tuesday (1921), pieces that appeared in literary periodicals, and several previously unpublished works. Among the selections are "Kew Gardens," "The Mark on the Wall," "The String Quartet," and the title story, "A Haunted House." Leonard Woolf's foreword explains his efforts to fulfill Virginia's intention to publish a second collection of her shorter fiction. The original dust jacket was designed by Woolf's sister, Vanessa Bell, whose distinctive artwork appeared on numerous Hogarth Press publications. Although dated 1943, the first edition was issued in January 1944, with a printing of 6,000 copies.
