Roosevelt’s account of his eleven-month safari in British East Africa and the Congo, undertaken after his presidency, remains one of the great classics of big-game hunting literature. Drawing from his journals and articles originally published in Scribner’s Magazine, Roosevelt describes both the dangers of the hunt and the landscapes, peoples, and natural history of East Africa with characteristic vigor. The illustrations are a particular strength of the work, with Kermit Roosevelt’s photographs providing an on-the-ground record of the expedition and Philip R. Goodwin’s drawings dramatizing its most memorable moments. Organized in part to secure specimens for the Smithsonian Institution, the journey and its record helped shape American popular images of Africa in the early 20th century.
