REED, Myrtle. At the Sign of the Jack o’ Lantern.
New York and London: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1905. Early printing, November 1905, two months after the first. 353pp. Publisher’s lilac cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped decoration and lettering to front board and spine, white title panel to front board, and gilt top edge. Light rubbing and soiling to boards, with wear at spine ends and corners. Previous owner’s name in pencil on the front free endpaper. Very Good-.
Despite its Halloween-inspired title, At the Sign of the Jack o’ Lantern is a romantic comedy rather than a work of horror, following the adventures of a young couple who inherit an unusual country house and find themselves contending with an assortment of eccentric visitors and relatives.
