MERTON, Holmes W. Descriptive Mentality from the Head, Face and Hand.

Philadelphia: David McKay, 1899. Illustrated with over 600 original drawings by the author. Publisher's original blue cloth with silver lettering and illustrations of a phrenological head and hands to front board, enclosed within black decorative borders. Light rubbing to extremities, particularly spine ends and corners, with minor wear to cloth. Previous owner's inscription to front endpaper. Pages lightly toned, with occasional spotting. Binding appears sound. Very Good.

An extensively illustrated late Victorian treatise on phrenology, physiognomy, and palmistry, presenting methods of determining personality, intelligence, temperament, and moral character through the examination of physical features. Merton combines the study of cranial formations, facial proportions, and the lines and shapes of the hands into an elaborate system of character analysis. More than 600 drawings illustrate the supposed relationships between physical characteristics and mental faculties, accompanied by detailed explanations, diagrams, and charts for evaluating individual traits.

Published at the close of the nineteenth century, the work reflects the continuing popular appeal of phrenology and related pseudoscientific theories of human character, even as their scientific foundations were increasingly challenged. Its numerous anatomical illustrations, annotated heads, facial profiles, and palmistry diagrams make it a particularly interesting example of the period's fascination with reading personality through physical appearance.
