GRIMSHAW, Beatrice. The New New Guinea.
London: Hutchinson & Co., 1910. First edition. 8.75" x 5.75", viii + 322pp with forty-nine illustrations and a folding map. Publisher's blue cloth gilt. Light rubbing to extremities, a few spots of foxing, map present and sound, binding tight. Fore edge foxed. Very Good.
An engaging early twentieth-century account of Papua and British New Guinea by one of the period's most prolific travel writers. Grimshaw traveled extensively through the South Pacific and developed a reputation for venturing into regions seldom visited by European women. Drawing upon firsthand observation, she describes colonial administration, indigenous cultures, village life, trade, transportation, and exploration during a period of rapid imperial expansion in the region.
Particularly notable for its photographic illustrations depicting ceremonies, architecture, daily life, and tribal communities, including images documenting areas then regarded by Europeans as among the least explored portions of the Pacific. The folding map provides a contemporary view of British New Guinea and surrounding territories shortly before major political and administrative changes reshaped the region.
