The Doubtful Guest tells of a mysterious, birdlike creature in sneakers that arrives uninvited at a family’s home and never leaves. The guest behaves with a mix of mischief and menace—spoiling possessions, unsettling the household, and generally making life difficult. The book is written in rhyming couplets with Gorey’s darkly whimsical illustrations, blending absurd comedy with a faint air of menace.
