DICKENS, Charles. A Christmas Carol.
London & New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1904. 7.75" x 5.5". With 12 photogravure plates and other illustrations by Frederick Simpson Coburn. Publisher’s dark green cloth designed by Margaret Armstrong, upper cover and spine elaborately stamped in gilt, dark blue, and red with holly and decorative cartouche, signed “MA” on upper cover. Light rubbing and a few small marks to boards, wear at corners and spine ends, gilt still bright and highly presentable. Front hinge starting. Interior toned with occasional foxing. A handsome copy. Very Good.
A particularly attractive illustrated edition of Dickens’s perennial holiday classic, notable for its scarce Margaret Armstrong holiday binding- one of the more appealing Christmas-themed designs from her decorative cloth period. Armstrong-designed Dickens titles remain consistently sought after both for literary significance and for the strength of the binding design itself.
