George Catlin was a 19th-century American painter, writer, and explorer best known for his extensive travels among Native American tribes and his efforts to document their cultures through art and observation. Driven by a belief that Indigenous ways of life were vanishing, he created hundreds of portraits and scenes that serve as some of the earliest visual records of Native American life on the Plains.
