CATHER, Willa Sibert. The Troll Garden.
New York: McClure, Phillips & Co, 1905. First printing with "Published March, 1905" on copyright and all other correct points. 7.5" x 5", 253pp. Embossed red cloth with gilt titling, lacking jacket. Moderate rubbing at head/tail of spine. Inscription on FFEP. Minor pencil in margins of Table of Contents. Binding secure and textblock clean. Very Good.
The Troll Garden was Cather’s first published story collection, marking her transition from journalist and teacher to a nationally recognized fiction writer. It introduced themes - artistic ambition, isolation, and the clash between innocence and sophistication - that she would refine in her later works. The book’s standout story, “Paul’s Case,” became one of the most anthologized American short stories of the 20th century.
