BROWN, J. H. Spectropia; or, Surprising Spectral Illusions. Showing Ghosts Everywhere, and of Any Colour.
London: Griffith & Farran, Corner of St. Paul's Churchyard, 1866. Fifth edition. 9.75" x 7.75", xvi + 11pp with sixteen illustrations, of which thirteen are hand-colored, designed to produce apparitions, ghosts, witches, skeletons, demons, and other spectral figures through a simple visual process explained in the text. Original printed pictorial boards with red cloth spine. Hinges cracked but holding. Pencil drawings and juvenile scribbling to multiple endpapers and blank leaves. One illustration lacking approximately one-half inch of the lower margin, not affecting the image. General wear, soiling, and scattered foxing. Complete. Good and scarce.
An enduring Victorian optical amusement combining popular science, visual trickery, and the nineteenth-century fascination with ghosts and spiritual phenomena. Published during the height of public interest in séances, spirit-rapping, and other supernatural claims, Spectropia adopts a notably skeptical tone, explaining how the eye may be deceived into perceiving apparitions where none exist. The hand-colored plates employ retinal afterimages and complementary colors to create striking spectral effects when viewed according to the accompanying instructions.
Unlike many contemporary children's books, Spectropia occupies a curious position between scientific demonstration and gothic entertainment. The illustrations range from conventional white-sheet ghosts to witches, skeletons, devils, and other fantastical figures, producing an effect that remains surprisingly effective more than a century and a half after publication. Copies were often heavily used by children, making complete examples increasingly difficult to locate, particularly with all illusion plates present.
