TOLKIEN, J.R.R. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, n.d. Thirty-first printing of the revised American edition. Publisher's original green cloth with black lettering to front board and spine, in illustrated dust jacket featuring Tolkien's original mountain-and-forest design. Illustrated by the author, including Thror's Map. Cloth bright with minor wear and a small spot to front board, but with substantial discoloration along the lower portion of the rear board. Dust jacket shows rubbing and edgewear, with small chips and short tears, particularly at spine ends and corners, and some discoloration to upper front panel. Interior pages lightly toned. Good+/Good+.

First published in 1937, The Hobbit introduced readers to Middle-earth through the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, whose unexpected journey with a company of dwarves leads him into encounters with trolls, goblins, elves, the dragon Smaug, and the creature Gollum. Originally conceived as a children's fantasy, the novel established the imaginative world Tolkien would expand in The Lord of the Rings.
