SCOTT, Sir Walter. The Lady of the Lake.
Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1853. 8.75" x 5.5". 375pp. Illustrated with 57 engraved illustrations on wood, including illustrated title, after Birket Foster and John Gilbert. Black leather binding with blind-tooled panel design and gilt spine lettering; marbled endpapers; elaborately gauffered edges. Binding appears modern. Foxing confined to the title page and its verso; remainder of the text clean and bright. Very Good+.
First published in 1810, "The Lady of the Lake" was one of the most popular narrative poems of the nineteenth century and firmly established Scott as the leading poet of the Romantic era. Its vivid Highland setting helped shape international perceptions of Scottish landscape, history, and identity, influencing both tourism and later historical fiction. The poem’s success also directly contributed to Queen Victoria’s fascination with Scotland and the broader romanticization of the Highlands in British culture.
