HAYES, Isaac I. The Land of Desolation: Being a Personal Narrative of Observation and Adventure in Greenland.
New York; Harper & Brothers, 1872. First American Edition. 7.5" x 5.5", 357pp + 2 ads. With 40 illustrations. Brick red cloth with gilt cover design and spine titling. Edges well rubbed, most notably head/tail of spine. Moderate soiling in text. Two book plates inside front cover from Betrand Norman Kager, Jr. and Robert Lloyd Lillestrand, the latter a noted explorer in his own right: Robert Lloyd Lillestrand held about 20 US and foreign patents. He participated in two scientific North Pole Expeditions. He was a member of the Explorer's Club, Arctic Institute of North America, board member of the Norwegian American Historical Association, and the Society for the History of Discoveries.
A striking association copy linking two generations of Arctic exploration—Hayes, who chronicled Greenland’s icy desolation, and Lillestrand, a 20th-century polar scientist and inventor. Their shared legacy, preserved in this well-illustrated volume, bridges the heroic and scientific ages of polar discovery. Tremaine 6792.
