Following his famed explorations in equatorial Africa, Du Chaillu turned his attention northward, producing one of the earliest vivid travel accounts of Scandinavia available in English. Land of the Midnight Sun combined careful ethnographic observation with an adventurer’s enthusiasm, documenting the landscapes, folklore, and daily life of the Sámi and other northern peoples. The work was praised in its day for bringing the remote Arctic world into the Victorian imagination with both scientific detail and narrative charm.
